Best Sleep Mask for Side Sleepers? Maybe Not a Mask at All

Woman sleeping on her side in a blue Beside sleep hood, flowers and dappled sunlight around her.

If you're a side sleeper and a sleep-mask user, you've probably lived through some version of this: you put the mask on, fall asleep, and wake at 3 a.m. with light on your face because the pillow pushed it sideways — or with a strap buckle drilling into your ear.  Naturally, you start searching for the best sleep mask for side sleepers, but what if it isn't a mask at all?

Below, we look at what goes wrong when side sleepers wear masks, including ones from Manta, Drowsy and Nodpod, and then at how the Beside Weighted Sleep Hood built to avoid those problems.

Why Side Sleeping Is So Hard on Sleep Masks

Side sleepers leave a lot of complaints about sleep masks. To understand what keeps going wrong, we read through thousands of real-user reviews and community discussions, focusing on three well-known brands that each take a different approach: Manta (adjustable eye cups), Drowsy (padded silk) and Nodpod (a weighted pod). The same three problems came up again and again.

The pillow pushes the mask out of place, and light slips in

On your side, the pillow presses on one edge of the mask and pushes it off position. A small shift is enough to open a gap at the nose or temple, on whichever side you're lying. One side sleeper wrote that anything else gaps at the nose on whichever side I'm sleeping. Cup-shaped masks can leak too: an owner of the original Manta mask gets some light leakage with the side sleeping.

Pressure on your face and ears builds up overnight

On your side, your cheek and ear are pressed into the pillow, so anything between them becomes a pressure point. A strap is already one extra layer against your skin. Buckles or adjusters on some masks can even end up right on your ear or temple. Padding doesn't guarantee relief either: a five-star Drowsy reviewer who was otherwise happy wrote that the thick mask can become quite painful over time for side sleeping, and suspected their memory-foam pillow made it worse.

The mask that's gone by 3 a.m.

Waking up with the mask somewhere else on the bed is one of the most common complaints. A side-sleeping Trustpilot reviewer said their Drowsy mask does not stay on at all. Nodpod's own site says its mask is meant to help you fall asleep, not stay on all night, and that it may slip off while you're sound asleep. Tightening a strap to prevent this is a trade-off, because a tighter band is also a more restrictive one.

Many owners still like these masks, and none of this makes them bad products. Side sleeping is simply one of the hardest tests a mask faces. Anything that sits on or around the eyes depends on a strap, a cup or a weight staying where you put it, and a pillow works against all three.

A Different Approach: The Weighted Sleep Hood

The Beside Weighted Sleep Hood takes a different route. It's a full-head hood with a closed top that covers your eyes and ears, with no strap at the back of your head. It's designed to address the three problems above, and it's a weighted eye mask for side sleepers that doesn't put the weight on your eyes. Here's how.

It wraps your head instead of clamping it

Most masks stay on by squeezing: an elastic band, a buckle, or a cup pressed to your face. The hood stays on through gentle friction spread across your whole head, not a tight strap pressing on one spot. There's no buckle or adjuster to dig into your skin, and nothing to over-tighten.

Choose a size instead of adjusting a strap

Removing the adjustable parts doesn't mean giving up a personalized fit. Instead of straps and sliders that you re-tune every night, the hood comes in different sizes chosen by head circumference, so the fit is set once when you pick your size. You get a fit that's personal to you without the hardware that causes pressure on your side, and without the nightly tinkering.

Full wrap on top, contoured fit below

With a regular mask, light can easily slip in from the sides, the top, or around the nose, and side sleeping makes every gap worse. The hood's full-wrap design closes off the sides and the top by covering the entire head. Along the bottom, it curves to follow the nose and cheek line, with a dedicated light-blocking layer that sits against the skin. The shell is soft stretch fabric filled with glass beads, with no molded foam cups, so there's no raised rim to push into your cheek when you lie on your side.

Even, gentle weight with no pull on your eyes

The weight of Beside sleep hood comes from tiny glass beads spread across the whole face and separated into over 25 cells, so it stays distributed even when you turn. Unlike traditional weighted sleep masks that concentrate pressure on your eyes, the sleep hood gives a steadier, all-around gentle pressure instead of a downward pull. One customer who usually dislikes weighted masks wrote on the product page that this one feels like light pressure around my head rather than something pushing on the eyes. Another customer, a side sleeper, called it the first one I did not have to fix half-asleep.

The Short Version

Side sleepers tend to hit three problems with sleep masks: shifting that lets light in, pressure on the face and ears, and a mask that's gone by morning. Cup-based, padded and weighted-pod masks each handle some of this, but side sleepers are usually not satisfied with them. The Beside Sleep Hood takes another route. It wraps the head instead of clamping it, sets fit by size instead of adjustments, curves around the nose and cheeks, and spreads gentle weight so nothing pulls on your eyes. If you've had trouble finding a comfortable sleep mask for side sleeping, it's worth a look.

Side Sleeper Sleep Mask FAQ

What is the best sleep mask for side sleepers?

It helps to start with what usually goes wrong. For side sleepers, most traditional sleep masks run into three issues: they shift and let light in when the pillow pushes on them, they put pressure on your face and ears because of straps and hardware, and they tend to slip off by morning. If you don’t mind one or two of those, a traditional mask may be enough. If all three sound familiar, a strapless, full-wrap sleep hood like Beside’s is built specifically to avoid them.

Why does my sleep mask shift or fall off when I turn over?

When you lie on your side, the pillow presses against the mask's edge and moves it, and a mask that relies on a strap, a cup or a weight can slide out of place. Tightening the strap often just makes it uncomfortable. Repositioning the eye cups, choosing a flatter profile or trying a mask with softer design can all help.

Is a weighted eye mask comfortable for side sleeping?

It depends on where the weight sits. Some side sleepers find weight directly over the eyes feels like a downward pull, and some weighted eye masks, such as Nodpod, say they aren't designed to stay on all night. A weighted eye mask for side sleepers that spreads the weight around the head, like a weighted sleep hood, avoids putting it on your eyes.

What is a sleep hood, and how is it different from a sleep mask?

A sleep hood covers the whole head, including the eyes and ears, instead of just the eyes. Its full-wrap design blocks light from the sides and top, stays on when you turn, and gives you an even, gentle pressure around your head rather than a strap in one spot. You can read more in what a sleep hood is and how it differs from a sleep mask.
